RECOMMENDEDfados-saura

Saudade: the sadness that the Portuguese tell you is untranslatable, but implicit in each and every heart-tearing note of fado, their version of the blues. Spanish director Carlos Saura follows his earlier music films like “Flamenco” and “Iberia” with a captivating, visually expressive performance doc on the haunting music, including performers Mariza, Camané, Carlos do Carmo, Chico Buarque, Lila Downs and Caetano Veloso. The settings and the music tell the tale: there’s no explaining here, just a rich eighty-eight minutes brimful with saudade. 88m. 35mm. (Ray Pride)
